Another 52 mc question
Another 52 mc question
Well let's start off by saying I am new to this forum and just purchased a 1952 john deere mc two days ago it runs like a top and steers beautifully. It has a belt drive, pto and the mc 1000 tool carrier someone recently painted it and did somewhat of a good job doing so (not really to my standards I'm a perfectionist) but it will do for now. I've spent some time reading through the post on here and one post interested me a little so here's my question did john deere make and industrial mc or just the normal ag crawler the only reason I ask is a good friend of mine has a 420 c industrial that's been verified from two cylinder mag to be such. I noticed that mine has some normal spots where it didn't get full coverage in the painting process and is showing the industrial orange. I know in a previous thread that some people on here said that the factory would put different color parts on if the line went out but my draw bar both finals engine and trans show the yellow/orange underneath the green.
Another question I have is has anyone had john deere dealers come out to put a new serial number tag on lately mine is there and in rough shape but still has a legible serial number. Do they put a sticker on or is it a replica plate?[/img]

Nothing like an old tractor
Yellow, or green crawler was simply an option, there really is no such thing as and "industrial" MC, 40, 420, etc. It is only a descriptive term used by the owner to describe his paint color, or a description used by someone trying to cheat a prospective buyer into buying something that is not rare, trust me, seen that more than once.
It is very possible your MC was yellow, and was painted at some time in it's life. A serial number search may verify what is was born as.
Getting a new serial number tag is quite a process, and many dealers will not even make the effort to help you, and I know one block man in particular that will not even bother to try and help. Even if you did get one, they are a product ID tag with a bar code just like every modern product, and will not be in any way like the tag on your MC, it will just be a tag that you can rivet on somewhere else.

Thanks lavoy,
I appreciate you answering my questions in a timely fashion. I do have one more question I know the M's sheet metal is the same as the mc but is there a company out that makes replacement sheet metal? I've looked everywhere and all I can seem to find is used stuff.

Used stuff is the correct stuff. It sounds like you may intend to take your crawler to shows or at least show it off to your friends. People admire the time, money, and effort it takes to find or restore an original old crawler to near perfection.

Hi,
Or, skip the bondo. Hammer it out as good as it will go, and paint the wrinkles. Adds character.
