What do I have?

I just bought a cabin in W.Va. And in the basement is a piece of John Deere equipment that I would call a bulldozer except instead of a blade on front it has a bucket. There is also a backhoe attachment for the rear.
I copied this info from the metal tags:
Model 831 series 440 ICD serial #456006. Another serial #3180, and on the engine it says General Motors Deisel.
Any info such as year, operator instructions, and possible value, etc. would be appreciated.

Good evening, and welcome to the board.

Based on what you provided, you have a JD 440 Industrial Crawler Diesel (or ICD). Based on the serial number, it appears to be a 1960 which was the last manufacturing year they were produced. The engine should be a General Motors (GM) 2-53. You have what is called a loader attachment (i.e. the bucket and frame) rather than a dozer attachment (i.e. a blade and frame). The loader attachment's model is 831. The backhoe attachment should also have its own data plate but would guess if original it is a Model 50 or 51.

Manuals do exist for this machine- one of our members has indicated that he can supply manuals on CD, as I am not sure they are still available from Deere.

It is way too speculative to get into value because that is dependent on things such as condition, location, etc. (just like antique autos) but value could vary from high three figures for scrap value all the way to high four figures for completely restored machine (maybe low five figures for something exceptional, although usually that is an asking price rather than a true value). Most operating 440ICDs likely fall in the low four figures. Photos would help us understand more about your machine.

There are quite a few "early" (2 cylinder crawler) JD crawler experts on here including the board's administrator and parts supplier Lavoy so they should be able to give you more info.

Thanks a bunch, can't get pics until I get back to W.Va. And get it outside.
But this is way more info than I had before.
The previous owner of the place said he had it running about 4 years ago when he parked it. He was from another state too and sold the place because he was to busy to get there to enjoy it.
Got a lot of auto (gasoline) experience but zero diesel knowledge.

Could you tell me how much this crawler with loader and back hoe attachment might weigh, ball park, so I know possible trailer requirements

You may want to look at these spec sheets from Murphy Tractor. The first is a 440IC with a 831 loader. And the second is for a 95A hoe as mounted on a tractor.
