Hi,

They don't put ethanol into diesel, but they do put biodiesel (soybean oil) into it, and that is known to cause issues when over 5% (what they call B5).....

Well, the air intake was worth a look because if that was it, super simple.

Sounds like the starter is an issue. The warm cable tells the story there. But...if the engine internals have high drag, you get the same result with a good starter.

The air filter is big and should be easy to locate. About 12" tall and 5"- 6" diameter. There is a couple clips about 3" up from the bottom that hold the base on, which should have the oil in it.
Sounds like you need to cet the starter rebuilt. That could make a world of help starting it.
Do the primer and glow plugs work? Without these, it probably won't start unless it thoroughly warmed up.

I was thinking it had the same oil bath air cleaner as my 1010.

I believe there are two air cleaners on a stock 2010- the dry pre-cleaner that is more obvious above and then the oil bath cleaner below at your feet as previous described. maybe he only checked the pre-cleaner?

If you read my older posts about 2010 issues the starter condition makes a BIG difference. However are you also disconnecting the HLR with the hand lever at your left foot? That also makes a big difference on drag and thus flywheel speed when starting.

Also cables may be too small- what size are your starter cables? They do get hot if cranked too long but shouldn't get hot unless cranking for more than 20-30 seconds or so. They may also be too long if not stock, thus increasing resistance especially if also undersized.
