hydraulic system JD 1010

Post by George tracker » Tue Sep 27, 2016 11:15 am

Just bought a new project and need advice and parts. It is a JD 1010 crawler (serial # 49000, I think) with loader and has a JD 93 backhoe attached (looks like more hoe than the tractor needs, but works) . When I remove the hoe, I find quick connect couplers (Bruning, Lincoln, Neb). The book on the 93 backhoe says that these connectors MUST be capped and plugged if connected to a closed center system, or nothing else hydraulic will work. There were no plug and cap and I am wondering if they are essential, or mostly to protect the connectors from FOD. Does anyone have such plugs and caps? My local JD dealer is very helpful, but found them obsolete and not available.
The 1010 operators manual seems to indicate that this is a closed center sustem.
I will also be needing steering clutch parts soon and will need advise on that repair. The left works, the right doesn't so operating it is a little clumsy at times.

I believe you need to connect the 2 ends/hoses together or you will screw the pump up if you try to start it

The 73 backhoe book says to do that for a open center system. How can I tell for sure if this is open center or closed center system?

I think the quick couplers will be OK without plugs/caps. Start the machine, watch that fluid isn't squirting out, then try the loader.

1010 is open center, connect the hoses to each other or you will blow up your hyd pump.

Thanks all, esp Lavoy. I will be needing steering clutch parts as soon as I have time to tear into it and Lavoy sounds like the place to start for parts. Really appreciate this site. Until time permits, will keep using with one track steering, the reverser helps with that.

Hi,

The smallest machine I know of which was equipped with Closed Center was the later model 1520 wheel tractor.

The idea was to have it on the larger Ag machines so they would not be draining engine power via the hydraulic pump when the hydraulics were not in use.

Now, of course, the 1520 was a fairly small 3-cylinder machine. I don't know why they bothered to put CC on those....

I was going by the 93 backhoe manual that said that if it didn't have the T handle selector valve in the hydraulics it was a closed system. really glad its not so. Thanks for the response.
