1010 Gas hard starting

Post by TwoJddozers » Mon Oct 17, 2016 1:42 pm

Hello
In new to the JD board, been ,but been reading it for a while,
I've got a 64- 1010 gas -positive ground, and it's one of those hard starting ones.
It doesn't like to start if it sat for a while, once it get going from day to day it's good, but turn the gas off on let it sit for 2 months and then forget it starting.
Recently did complete tune up, points, cap , rotor, plugs, wires.
Took carb off and checked it out - looked good.
Last time the only way I could get it started was squirt gas into cylinders and put plugs back in and was able to get it going, then ran fine , but then let it sit for two months and same thing again won't start.
It has a prestolite disturber , positive ground , is it an idea to go for the electronic ignition? And what else do I need?, also going to get a carb kit and rebuild carb- TSX860.
Worst part about this I thought it was running good and drove it back into my camp to work and now it's letting me down,
Read about bypassing the ignition switch with a second source of 12 power for starting? Anyone else done this?
Any one gone through this and how can I mak this 1010 a reliable starting machine??

I have a 1010 gas and I had problem of starting and changed the ignition coil. I find to turn gas on momentarily and turn back off with minimum choke the best way. My engine floods quick. After cranking engine starts easy, maybe to turns. Mine has a 12 volt system.

does it run good once you get it going?
a compression test should be done to see if compression is good to eliminate that as the source of your problem.
sounds like either choke isn't working causing it to be cold blooded or choke is working and ignition system is producing weak spark and she floods easy when you are choking for the cold start.
next time you try to start it, choke it, when it doesn't go, take out a plug......if it is dry your choke isn't working....if it is wet you have a weak spark and it is flooding very easy.

The fact that it runs if you add fuel usually says electrical is good. Alcohol in gas tends to stratify with time. Drain the carb when you shut down (or turn off fuel and run it until it quits).

If it will start by squirting gas into the cylinders,it needs the choke checked and I'd do a compression test. If compression is low, it won't draw its fuel in well, nor will it fire the air/fuel mix that it might be getting.

Hi
This funny part is I live in Manitoba, my dozer's are in New Brunswick at out cottage, so when I get there and have to fix rather than us them - it's tough.
The Last one I bought I paid a good buck as it ran like a champ , then my second trip out it started this - not starting stuff, one of my trips out took me 3 days to get it running.

"Recently did complete tune up, points, cap , rotor, plugs, wires." what about condenser? YES you can put 12 volt direct to the coil to see if that helps MOST cars had "HOT START" that put 12 volt to the coil for starting then dropped back to about 6VOLT for run .... HOT START can be put on 1010 if it helps to start
