1957 420C - Pressure in fuel tank

Post by dr1zsk1 » Mon Oct 31, 2016 10:24 am

My 420 is gaining pressure in the fuel tank.

There is not heat associated with it, the tank is cool.

I put a new vented cap on it and though it says made in China it is functioning no better than the USA made one I had on it.

It steadily builds pressure. There is no incorporated vent system on the tank.

I don't see any bubbles coming up in the tank when it's run without a cap and looking into it.

I posted this earlier and it didn't seem to post.
If man can break it man can fix it .. it just takes time and money.

Hi,

Drill a hole in the fuel cap, I suppose. My 1958 420 has a vent line, but I think the earlier ones didn't.

My question is where is the pressure coming from? Makes me think your battery posts might be hitting the bottom of the tank sometimes and heating it up....

Hi,

I use a piece of 1/8" paneling cut to follow the shape of the underside of the tank as a safety shield. There is precious little space between the battery and the tank on the 420 (unlike all that space between on the M).

Battery post hitting bottom of tank will blow a hole in it instantly. Used to have some spectacular pics from a customer that showed what happened when he loaned his crawler out. Needless to say, the pics were from a distance.
That is why you never use a any MC through 440 crawler without a battery hold down.

Battery tie down

Post by dr1zsk1 » Mon Oct 31, 2016 7:24 pm

Thank you Lavoy - will take that to heart! Better yet act on it.

I drilled a tiny hole in the top of the Chinese cap and it is not holding pressure any more. The hole is offset from the center of the cap so the fuel does not splash up. Seems to be good.

Hi,

I have seen one where the battery somehow didn't blow a hole in the tank, luckily for the owner (wasn't me). The symptom was that it would be working just fine, then spray gas out of the cap. There was a half-melted negative battery post and terminal to show what the problem was.

I think he just got lucky due to a bunch of corrosion on the outside of the post and terminal.....

Hi,

I don't think a lottery ticket would have done much good - I think he used up all his good luck already!

I know this thread is a year or so old, but a #75 or 78 battery has the terminals on the side, only. These are 12 v, neg ground, but have been working fine on my old 420C.

I had the same problem with fuel tank pressurizing this past summer. The gas tank has started weeping around the seam of tank up next to the throttle area. Have a new style fan blade now installed that was supplied by Lavoy and another tank to go in. Will see how this goes. One thing I did notice the other day looking at a model 40 wheel tractor was that the sheet metal sets a lot higher above The engine, than on my 420 c.

Vapor pressure of gasoline is higher than atmospheric pressure unless it's colder than roughly 20 degrees (depends on the formulation of the fuel). Therefore, all that is necessary to build pressure in a gas tank is to seal it up.

Older machines required a vented cap, newer machines had a tight cap and a separate vent line. The vented cap is usually the tall version, as it has a baffle and filter inside.
