Other ways to lube 40c rollers temporarily

Post by Zachary Hoyt » Mon Nov 07, 2016 12:05 pm

I have had a 40c for about 18 months now and am finally about ready to get it out in the woods and give it a try after replacing the left bull gear and a few other parts. It's a 1953, 3 roller, no blade, small winch on the back and I hope to use it to skid logs in places that are too hard to reach with the Farmall 300 wheel tractor. I have a case of corn head grease from the John Deere dealer and I would like to put some in the rollers. From what I have read on here the right way to do this is with a special low pressure grease gun that costs a fair bit. If I find the crawler is useful and decide to keep it then I will buy one, but for temporary use while I figure it out I am hoping there's a way I can get enough grease into the rollers to keep them happy for a few hours of running. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Hi,

Well, you can use a normal gun. Far less lube goes in per stroke, and you cannot feel when they are full. So, it is *way* easy to blow a bellows seal out.

Edit: never mind about the bellows seals. I forgot that the 3-rollers do not have them. Grease away with any old gun and use a sticky grease, not Corn Head grease....

Don't use corn head grease in a 3 roller, it will not last half an hour. Use the stickiest, heaviest grease you can get, and buy lots of it. 3 roller undercarriage needs to be greased LIBERALLY every 8 hours, more if run in water.

Thank you all very much. I must have been reading about later crawlers using corn head grease. I have some regular grease that I use in the hay equipment and tractors and I'll see if I can find something heavier in town.
