420 pto coupler on 40 3pt conversion

Post by rangerstan » Fri Nov 11, 2016 8:26 pm

Hello, while adding a complete 3pt setup onto a 4 roller 40C. I have the 420 rear transmission cover but seems the cotter pin style 40 pto coupler is different for the seal on the later cover. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Stan

There are probably others out there that know more about this but according to my 40 parts book, the powershaft attachment with the pin type coupler is unique to the 40H and 40W. There are also 5 different transmission rear cover and yoke assemblies listed for the different models of 40's. The one for the crawler is listed as fitting the crawler and utility only. I don't have a 420 parts book but the same situation may exist with the 420. If so, you may have to "mix and match" to get the right combo. Good luck!

You can't have a 420 rear cover on a 40 unless someone has removed the coupler from the shaft in the trans. Unless your rear cover has the small sealed cavity that the shaft is supposed to come through it is a 40 cover. IF it is a 420 cover, you will need a 40 rear cover, the coupling to go on the PTO shaft in the transmission, and a 40C ONLY PTO shaft. 40C and 420C are not interchangeable.

Thanks for the info. The reason that I picked up the 420 cover was for the extra stud bosses for the rockshaft support piece. I now see the differences in the pto and coupling. After I removed my original 40C rear cover I have found a small crack so it cannot be used again. My only option now is to machine away the cast cavity away and use the cover as it is a 40.

Someone suggested that maybe an early 420 cover exists with the 40C style pto but with the exterior stud housings. Does such a piece exist?

Not to my knowledge, it serves no purpose. All 420 rear covers fit all 420 crawler transmissions, so why make a special one. There may have been something available for the 40 crawlers as 3PT hitch was a field installed bundle for the 4 and 5 roller 40's.
