Did you ever get a response to your decal question? I see some advertised but not with the yellow strip decal. Did you end up painting that on? I have a 420C (serial 133412) and I would like to repaint and redecal it. The engine has been overhauled and new pins in the tracks.

None have the stip decal, you have to paint that on, and then decal.

Thanks, I am tempted to take the sheet metal off and have it professionally painted, including the yellow strip. Then I would do or not do the cast and under carriage. It is a working crawler (well occasionally) and I assume the paint would soon be off the tracks and blade. The downside (and maybe there are others) is that if I paint later, I probably would not quite match the original paint, particularly if I used a different brand. What do you think?

Hi,

The original yellow stripe was not paint. It was ink. So were the letters. They screenprinted it all on at the factory. Being ink and not paint is why the yellow faded to white.

Most folks paint on the yellow stripe and then use cut vinyl for the lettering. There are also decals for the lettering. I never liked the look of decals myself, but it was what Deere made available back in The Day. I think I still have a box or two of the decal sets stashed away in some box on some shelf out in my shop somewhere..... I know I used one set to scan into a computer for use with a vinyl cutting program. That got me the oddball fonts Deere used to cut vinyl so it looked correct.

In my electronics shop, I have other shelves - I call them The Shelves of Obsolete Electronics, or SOE - with that vinyl cutter and the old Pentium I computer with Win 98 which was what that old program wanted. I used it for doing up race cars. Doing tractors was a sideline. It all got put onto the SOE when a drive roller on the cutting plotter busted up. By then, I was done with racing (for the third...or was that fourth?...time).

Maybe I could resurrect that stuff. I mean, it is only 20 years old. Not 60 years old like the crawlers we mess with. Unfortunately, electronics age fast. On the order of 10 years worth of Crawler Time for every 1 year that passes. So, parts are probably Long Gone for that. And, then we have to see how the capacitors aged even if I find a drive wheel. I will tell you that I spend more time R+R-ing Caps than we all do steering parts on these crawlers...... :(
