Water, how?
Water, how?
I rebuilt the 420 about 4-5 years ago and it might have 60 hours since. I decided to change the gear oil. Dropped the finals and the oil was dirty but OK. Dropped the tranny yesterday and got milky oil. The engine oil is still pretty clean on the dipstick, minor coloring.
part II, Stored inside, never in water, not used in rain, condensation?? Only the tranny showed water in the oil

Hi,
I have to replace the gear oil in my 420c every couple of years. It slowly gets water in it from condensation of water vapor in the air over time.
Just a few days ago, it was completely covered in water. It is inside the pole barn. There had been no rain. But, the temp had gone from 28F to 65F during the course of the morning. And, the air pressure had risen nearly a full inch of mercury. The wind was from the South and brought the temp up and also brought a lot of humidity with it.
All my machines were soaking wet all day. The vehicles too, but they dried off by 2 PM as they are out in the sun. The machines stayed wet all day. With the mercury rise, it had to push air and water vapor in thru the vents. So, over time, water in the lube.

We have an 8N ford that is used to plow the driveway. A few years ago we went to plow and the tractor would stall when you let the clutch out. Turned out it had gotten enough condensation to freeze the shaft that went through the trans and ran the PTO.
We now pull the drain plug once a year to let any water out that is on the bottom.
