If leaving on 12 volts, the smallest you can find and cheap cables, 400CCA is what I would look for.

Lavoy,
battery
checks out the smallest available would actually be lawn tractor battery with those flat posts on em...they come in 400 cca. and are 12volt..seems to me dims are 6x8x7 or so hi
certainly would be smaller but would haft to change cables
do you think they would hold up?

Assuming that 440 had a group 1 battery ORG. Group 75 looks to be the best fit side terminal 9Lx7Wx8H www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart-75-3S-Auto ... y/16782703
OR group 22 post type BUT they are 3/8" longer than a group 1

2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper
I would look for a small capacity automotive style, some of them should be around at 500CCA or so. Big 12 volt in a 440 is a guarantee of broken nose cone, drive, or ring gear eventually unless you have the starter redone for 12 volts.

Hi,
Use the cheap, skinny cables from a car. They will be too long. Leave them long. They will act as a resistor to drop some power before it gets into the starter. You want them to get warm - exactly the opposite of what you want if it were still 6v.
Even then, with a small 12v battery and poor cables, you are risking blowing that starter and/or ring gear from too much force.

re..jd440 ic
ok
i am gonna check on rebuild to 12 volt starter...price....will post
please educate as to what actually doing so will keep starter and nose cone from destruction..do they install a heavier nose cone or does rewinding actually give a less ....impact....on bendix torque?
i too thought the small automotive 12volt would certainly be better than the lawn tractor battery.
thanks all

Rough rule of thumb, double voltage, double speed. Therefore the starter drive slams into the ring gear at twice the RPM and the damage begins. Also, a 500amp 12 volt battery has twice the power in watts as a 6 volt, which just exacerbates the problem.

Hi,
To go from 6v to 12v the starter armature and field coils need to be changed. A decent starter shop can do this. Problem is finding one where they still work on Old Stuff. That is very area dependent....

re..jd440 ic....edit battery 12volt
so
that seems to be what you are saying is that 12volt running 6volt starter literally speeds up the bendix and starter to basically twice as fast as the 6volt battery....
so i assume a 12volt starter really is basically same speed as 6volt....but is simply stronger and just a bit faster.....just not as fast as 6volt running at 12 volt
just curious...i wonder if rebuilder can scavenge an old gm starter with nose busted into the jd 6volt to make her 12volt which i happen to have fin i can find it
