gearmatic winch master control
gearmatic winch master control
My first post. hope this works ok! Working on brake side of master control.Does part no. 127 (brake piston) have a hole through the center? mine does not have the hole as shown in parts book. Are piston and brake push rod still available? Thanks Bob

Re: gearmatic winch master control
Some of the older Gearmatic parts are interchangeable with the newer parts. Take a look at the model 19 parts, I think it is the newer model number, and compare the parts. There was a few parts that I had bought new that fit my gearmatic 8a and also for the original winch controller.

Re: gearmatic winch master control
When you apply the clutch, is the winch supposed to reel in with the brake applied? I was under the impression that the master control had some gimmick for relieving pressure on the brake at the same time that the clutch was engaged, but after taking it apart they seem to be completely independent.
Re: gearmatic winch master control
No, brake is self-applying, it only disengages when spooling out.

Re: gearmatic winch master control
I think what you are saying is the brake grabs in one direction but not the other? It seemed to winch really hard when using it without the controller and a stuck clutch, but that may have been from the excessive amount of rust. (I was using the reverser to spool out cable which is how the clutch arm broke.)
Everything seems to be working except I need a new nipple, clutch fluid ran right out of it with a new U-cup. And the master control shaft leaks, I assume there is something for it in the rebuild kit.
Re: gearmatic winch master control
Kind of. It always will have drag when spooling in, but the brake will "slip" while it is spooling in. When you pull out, the brake self applies and holds the load until you disengage it with the MCU. Even then, they have some drag while the brake is disengaged, but not much if adjusted properly.
