re..tachometers

Post by dtoots1 » Sun Apr 02, 2017 11:02 am

was at harbor freight today....noticed they have a wireless tachometer ....seems to read revolutions of moving parts....fan blade??.i.e. would fan speed be accurate count for engine rpm????...would this give accurate tach reading on our machines not equipped?....is actually hand held...

by the way was looking at inspection camera there...got to searching and find out the internet has endoscopes for cell phones...and pcs...much cheaper..11 bucks?? Also note Walmart has some cheap ones too!

edit...got the endoscopes...2 of em...both had CDs with them..for install on pc
BOTH were broken....son got app off internet and installed on his windows based laptop works pretty well...no snaps but does video and picks up fairly good distance, now to take a peek in #2 cyl on donor engine

I believe the handheld tachs need a piece of reflective tape on the moving surface and it counts when it goes around. Could put it on a crank pulley to get an accurate reading. If there is any difference in pulley size between crank and fan you could get an error there. Or any belt slippage.

I used one of the Harbor Freight tachs on my 40c Hard to get a clear shot at the crank pulley so I used the flywheel through the hole for the timing mark If you cant get the tape to stick white paint seems to work.
