Early and Late 440 Final Drive Housing Interchangeability

Post by wilkinst3 » Tue Apr 25, 2017 6:39 pm

Hey guys, I have a 440 with SN 444723 that needs a new final drive housing (that's another story). Found a parts crawler with SN 457910. Based on the parts catalog, the final drive housings on these are different. Are they so different that I can't interchange them? Are there any modifications that can be done to the housing to make it work?

Thanks!
Trey

I do not see where that would prohibit interchanging the housings unless they needed more clearance for the 56 tooth bull gear. And then the new would replace the old but not the other way around unless you did some grinding.
After thinking for a minute, are the bull gears in the final drive housings or the rear end?

Hi,

In the final housings. Pinion gear on top, bull gear on the bottom.

Late housing uses different axle and sprocket as well. All in all, just simpler to replace with the correct part.

Thanks for the replies everyone -- super helpful! Not what I wanted to hear exactly, but better to find out now rather than later.

Not that I want to do this, but out of curiosity, it sounds like if you swapped BOTH sides of the final drive housings (and pinion gears and sprockets) on an early 440 for late 440 components that would work?

Hi,

Yes. Then they would both be the same again. There have been queries as to why a machine likes to constantly turn in the past.... ;)

Actually, you might want to do this. It is a good idea when you rebuild one side, go do the other one as well.

You can't just swap pinion gears, bull gears would need to be changed as well.

My 440 originally had the early style. I switched everything to the later style and it works perfect. Just don't forget, you need the different sprockets. I think you can broaden your search by looking for early 1010 sprockets.

I am an owner of a 420C, that someone installed a mismatched gearset on one side. I've had the dozer for about 5 years, now, and it's def a PIA. I just haven't had the time to tear off covers to count pinion teeth, but will be doing that shortly. One advantage of this setup is, when the blade is angled towards the slow side, it counteracts the thrust. Somewhat. Plowing snow and bring in the road/driveway edges, it works well. Roughing and rooting stumps, it doesn't really matter anyway, as I'm spinning the tracks anyway. Just saying. Maybe some of can have a circle track race. :D

hey Racejason, that would work on sidehills as well, keeping the nose going uphill ,,,, might have to build one like that.
next will be DOZER RACING, just like the old lawnmowers, boy that sport really got big fast.

Hi,

Put a 5-speed in 5th. That'll cure you of that idea pretty quickly! :P

I had the final drive housing in my 440 break and was able to get one off a donor machine, however the final drive was a green color. It installed as normal as far as bolting it on, was concerned, but the sprocket wouldn't fit, so I had to change it over as well, but then the throw out bearing couldn't be adjusted far enough to engage the clutch. After making due for a while with a dozer that could only turn one way, I removed the final drive again. I swapped out the clutch system and power shaft from the original and installed it on the replacement. Been working fine since
