JD 440 ICD RPM

Post by JD440ICD2006 » Sun Oct 15, 2006 6:16 am

I am guessing at the idle speed of around 600 RPM. How do you measure the "fast idle" speed of around 1,975 RPM?
I cannot find where a tachometer was available for the GM 2-53, only an hour meter.

can you say laser tach? don't know how lavoy is getting along with his but he bought one on ebay per my recommendation. about $25.00. put a piece of reflective tape on a "balancer weight" (those two big round things in front that actually spin at engine speed), aim and shoot. just go to ebay and search for laser tach.

detroits usually used an accessory drive on the back cover to drive a mechanical tach. deere made a custom cover so thats out.

the other possibilty is a tach signal from the alternator. this is common on small marine diesels. all alternators generate ac whose frequency is proportional to rpm that ac is rectified in dc to charge and power whatnot and stuff. the tach signal is simply one leg of the ac. on my todo list.

Michael,

Thanks for that info, I knew there had to be a way to get the RPM closer than guessing at it.
As for the alternator idea, that is out the door for me. I am one of those that believes in having it as original as possible and practical. I like the advantages of an alternator, but I run generators and volt regs on all of mine with good success. My 730D gen was rebuilt 5 years ago, it still keeps up with the lights on and I have the same battery. I haven't gotten that good of battery service in my Ford truck.
