JD 1010 blowing coolant

Post by country53 » Mon May 08, 2017 4:33 pm

Got a JD 1010, just brought it home, blows coolant out the radiator fill while cranking. Is this a blown head gasket or is there something else that commonly cause this on a 2 cycle Detroit diesel. I've never worked on one of these type of engines. I've worked on VW diesels. Deutz diesels and perkins diesels though.

I do not think that that it is a 1010 if it has a two cylinder diesel.
450`s c-dozer 6 way, b-loader.
350`s c-loader + ripper, b-loader with winch arch. B-loader with dozer pads
backhoe attachment.
1010 loader with forks for round bales
a few 610 Bobcats. many attachments

The 440 model is the only one that used the 2 stroke Detroit diesel. The 1010 used JD's own 4 cylinder-4 stroke diesel. You said it's pushing coolant out of the rad. while cranking and I assume it does it when it has fired up also. I think the Detroit 2 stroke will run backwards which might cause the water pump to push coolant out of the engine into the radiator and couldn't circulate with the thermostat closed, causing it push coolant out of the radiator. The problem with this idea is that I don't think you can crank the starter backwards. I'm not sure if it has a conventional head gasket or if it has o-rings. If it has o-rings that have failed, it may have coolant in the oil pan. Easy to check that and you can pressure test the radiator also.

Hi,

Nope. 1010 has a 4-cyl, 4-cycle diesel. 440 has a 2-cyl, 2-cycle Detroit.

Depending on how fast the water is being pushed out, might be the head gasket or from the blower pushing air past the ports in the cylinder sleeves. The Detroits don't have intake valves, the intake goes thru portholes in the sleeves. And, of course there is water above and below those portholes.

And, yes, they can run backwards. That isn't good for the blower, of course, but it would spin the water pump the wrong way.

Stan the two stroke Jimmy diesels do not have INTAKE Valves. They have exhaust Valves. The two cyl. 53 series only have two exhaust valves per cyl. Bigger engines (3 or more cyl.) can either have two or four exhaust valves per cyl. depending on the head. The rootes blower on the side is used as a scavage pump blowing all burnt gasses out of the cyl. while the intake ports and exhaust valves are open.

country53--- will you clarify whether the coolant pushed out when the engine was turning over (cranking) to start or after it was running or both? We really covered the Detroit but haven't helped your coolant problem. gregjo1948

Hi,

Yes. Of course. I was unclear there from wanting to point out the intake ports and blower as being different from other diesel designs. Thank you for pointing that out, because as I reread what I said, one would think there were no valves at all. ;)

Stan

BTW, fixed my earlier post where I did say that the exhaust went out ports, too. Duh. Teaches me to not post BC....Before Coffee! :P

Thanks for all the info. I took the engine apart and found the head gasket blown and the head is warped. when I get my shop service manual I will explore some more and decide whether to rebuild or replace. This is just something to pittle with while raining or cold.

I never figured out if it is a 1010 or a 440.

Hi,

Well, the description fit a Detroit 2-53, so that made it a 440. ;)

I guess from the man's findings, it had a faulty head gasket. I didn't know Detroit used a conventional gasket on the 2-53. The last time I had a Detroit apart, it was an 8V-92 and it had about 20 o-rings between the head and block. As they get older they get brittle and break, dumping coolant into the oil pan.
