Jd 1010 stearing clutch

Thank you for letting me join! I recently bought a jd 1010 crawler from an old man who has owned it all of his life.
The steering clutch was worked on by him but was never put back together properly, I bought the new parts and put them in, but the pressure plate when bolted on maxed out the three fingers. Is there supposed to be shims under the 6 pressure plate bolts, or do I need a gauge to adjust the fingers on the new pressure plate?

IF you are CERTAIN your assembly is correct (with six friction and five steel plates in proper position) then you can adjust the fingers. You will need a gauge available from Lavoy (usually). But it really says the assembly is not correct. You did not say which way the pressure plate is maxed.

Inside of brake drum it it written to use 8 fiber, and 7 steel discs, which is the same amount I bought in a lot. The fingers are all the way in, it does seem like there is to many disks, but that is what drum calls for

Hmmm. I thought the 1010 was 7 fibers like the 420. The 350 uses 8, and the pack of discs comes with 8.

Like I said drum says 7 steel 8 fibre, the last clutch fibre sticks out about three sixteenth of an inch beyond drum, so when you tighten down 6 bolts to attach pressure plate
The three fingers are maxed out so there is no way for the throw out bearing to push them in any more. Maybe I just need to adjust them with that tool?

All steering clutch pressure plates on all Deere dry cutch crawlers have to be adjusted once the clutch is assembled.
1010 is normally 8 fiber and 8 steel, but there are factory labelled brake drums like the one in question here.
