Winch fo a 40c

Post by fundytides » Mon Aug 21, 2017 11:08 am

I have been looking for a winch to fit my 40 4 roller crawler. I talked to a guy who has a winch off a 420 crawler. Before I drive 3 hours to look at it, does anyone know if it would fit on the 40 or would it need modification or a different mounting bracket?

Winch will fit, may not couple to PTO shaft.

Length of the shaft in the transmission, 40 is shorter, so on a Gearmatic for example, you need a different driveshaft in the winch adapter.

Talked to the guy on the phone and he went to look at the winch and says it is a "Braden Winch, Broken Arrow" but couldn't see a model #. He is not sure what model his John Deere was that he sold a few years ago after he restored it but says it was originally green and was a 2 cyl, so I think I am in th right ballpark. This is all new to me so will I need a pto shaft if there isn't one with it or does it attach directly into the back of my crawler? Maybe his crawler had the pto attachment but mine just has the two covers on the bank.

Braden typically just mounts to the drawbar and other points and is chain driven off the PTO shaft, so my previous comments do not apply.

So, I will need a pto shaft and whatever gear the chain goes on?

OK. I talked to the seller again. He has the two gears and the chain but I will need to find a power take off shaft and housing. From my parts book, it looks like this is unique to the crawler. Do you have one or are they hard to find?

I do not have one, little hard to find. 420 PTO can be made to work.
