Does a reverser on a 440 have a clutch(s) or is it just gears?
Thanks, gregjo1948

Re: 440 reverser
Hi,
Two clutch packs. One for forward, which locks the spyder gears up so that the output shaft spins in the same direction as the input shaft. One for reverse which unlocks the spyder gears and they make the output shaft spin backwards from the input shaft.
The clutch packs look a lot like what is used for the master clutch in motorcycles. The spyder gears look like the ones at the center of a differential in an axle. Not the same parts as anything else, this is just so you can visualize them.

Re: 440 reverser
Thanks Stan. I saw a 440 on Craigslist that said after running a while, a clutch would start slipping. The post said, not sure if it was reverser clutch or main clutch. I suppose, if it slipped in both directions, it would likely be the main clutch. Otherwise, both the reverser clutches would have to be slipping. Is there any adjustment for the reverser clutches.

Re: 440 reverser
Hi,
Yes, there are two barrel bungs on the sides of the reverser case. That is where the reverser clutches are adjusted. They run in a hydraulic oil bath but not under pressure, so I doubt there is heat related slipping like the later machines tend to have. These take a long time to get hot from conduction via the iron cases.

Re: 440 reverser
Thanks Stan. With that new knowledge, I think I'll take the ride to check out this 440.

Hi,
Hopefully, it will be worth the trip. Personally, while looking for a decent JD350 around here for the past decade, there hasn't been even one worth the trip.....
