In trying to find out the wear of chains, I only see references to guying the proper gauge to figure it out. Why is this? I have seen it enough times that i believe there must be some truth to it.. but cant figure out what the difference is in finding doing measurements and going from there. Again, the concept is what I am after.
I am putting this entry in both the later and older model forums, as I can't see the concept being much different, and that I have both a 350 and a 420.

Re: concept of track wear
Most people feel if the bushing is round, and that is what they call track wear. It is only one of several factors. I have a factory Deere undercarriage appraisal manual, and it looks to me like a full undercarriage appraisal would take a skilled mechanic a couple hours to do.

I had some undercarriage wear gauges re-produced a while back that compares the original profiles versus what you have on the crawler. Here is a link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/John-Deere-craw ... 1119381772

Re: concept of track wear
Hi,
That Dresser document really goes into detail. 40 pages worth! Some doesn't apply, like SALT chains and sealed rollers, but most does. The second half is a how-to measure everything, and if we had the Deere numbers listed, one could follow their instructions and obtain proper wear percentages. Maybe we need to PDF the Deere documents.....
The bottom line, though, is that everything wears on everything and the stuff is 100% worn when it doesn't look bad at all. And, when fixing it, I think it is best to just replace or rebuild everything at the same time.
I like the idea of getting new 350 u/c for my 420 and putting on a rim sprocket. But, the entire machine needs a full rebuild from one end to the other to make it worthwhile. As it is, it gets by just fine on the worn tracks. I don't do much work with it at all these days, so it keeps on keeping on.
Maybe I ought to let Lavoy totally renew the old girl. My search for a decent 350 to replace the 420 has gotten nowhere for 12 years now....
