JD 1010 gas crawler

Post by Keith-OR » Mon Oct 30, 2017 9:17 pm

I pulled -motor out of my crawler yesterday, who ever worked on this last, sure liked Form-a-Gasket, looks like they used a whole tube on the pan gasket. They also used form-a-gasket on water/thermostat manifold, intake manifold, and water pump, instead of using new gaskets..

What I need to know, is how can I pull the sleeve deck without damaging it. I want to check the O'rings on the sleeves while I have engine apart. there was no ridge on the top of the sleeves, rings on 2,3 and 4 piston was stuck. I had checked the compression prier to tear to removing engine, 90 lbs on these 3 cylinders. Rod bearing look good, rings showed no wear, but I am going to replace rod bearings and rings anyway.

Thanks
Keith

Span all 4 cylinder sleeves with a 2x4 and smack it with a heavy hammer. If you're going to remove the deck, you should replace the o-rings. I'd also ream the ridge, even if you don't see or feel it. The cylinders should be honed too. Be sure to clean the lands on the pistons before installing the new rings.

I mic.ed ridge, and it is the same as just below where the rings travel. The o-rings is what I want to check, that is why I ask about removing sleeve deck. There was water in the crank case, but it set outside without exhaust covered. guess I could pour some water/antifreeze in water jacket and see if I get leak out the bottom. I really don't want to pull sleeve deck if I don't have to... I have the engine hanging on engine stand with head and pan off, also have pistons removed.

Check the deck closely for cracks. If water set on top of the pistons and froze , it may have expanded enough to crack it.
