440 ICD trans oil drain and egine oil.

Post by mitchb » Fri Nov 17, 2017 2:50 pm

Hello, I just purchased a 440 ICD. I am changing the transmission oil on it. Is the only drain the square head one on the bottom of the case?

Also, what should I run for engine oil? Is straight 30 ok?

Hi,

The only engine oil to use is Delo 100. It has to be low ash, and this is all I know of which is these days. And, I only see it around here in 40 weight.

Yes, the plug on the bottom drains the trans. Don't confuse the trans drain plug for the reverser one. ;)

Trans drain is on the side of the case, reverser is on the bottom of the case.
Sometimes you will find the Delo 100 in 30wt, but still the only oil to run other than the equivalent oil in another brand, but can't remember what their names are now, and not a lot of them out there.

I would drain every oil on it, this is very often overlooked by previous owners, and is a prime source or mechanical failure. This is one of the first things I do on any piece of equipment I buy.

I agree. I have the final drives and transmission drained. Just waiting for oil and fuel filters. Does the reverser have oil in it? I understood it was just used if you had a pto or winch on the back. Mine does have the little horizontal lever by the shifter.

Hi,

Sorry, I should have mentioned the trans drain was on the side of the bottom of the trans case and the one dead center on the bottom was the reverser plug. All I did say was don't get confused....

Reverser is full of hydraulic oil. It sits between the engine and the transmission and reverses the trans input shaft to allow backing up in all five forward gears. And, it will reverse the PTO as well. You fill it to the bottom of the right side barrel bung. I usually pull both bungs and leave a pan under the right side and fill into the left side hole until oil runs out.... ;)

Besides, with the bungs out I can adjust both the forward and reverse clutch packs if needed.
