jd440 ic hydraulic pump/hyd cylinder
Re: jd440 ic hydraulic pump/hyd cylinder
Stan,
So now the question becomes....a bit more confusing....if i get the aw32 or aw48 hyd oil, is it ok to add it to the existing 10w or necessary to drain again? and if the 20w is non-detergent would that be mixable in system as well?
Since installing the rebuilt cylinder i seem to be having a bit of a problem yet, system was full when i took off cylinder, ran dozer a bit and checked again and had to add another quart or so, ran again and is back down to over a quart low so i know moved into the empty cylinder and now waiting to get additional fluid to get going again., so a bit of hassle
thanks

The cylinder itself will hold a couple quarts, so that is not unusual.
Yes the oil will mix in.

ok so will add the 20w non det that i have and will see what transpires. the 20w should give me a little heavier oil and will see if pump can handle or may be be more efficient?

Hi,
You should be fine. The only real issue with 20w v 10w is when the temp drops way down in the winter. Then, the heavier oil will cause the hydraulic system response to slow down. A secondary issue is if you have a seepage, then the 10w will dribble out faster than 20w in the summer.
If any of the oil in there already is detergent, I would raise the blade, drain the reservoir, drop the blade (getting most of the oil out of the cylinders) and then refill with non detergent. The little bit of detergent oil left after that won't matter.
The 10w and 20w will mix just fine.

Re: jd440 ic hydraulic pump/hyd cylinder
Well folks....that was nicely successful!!! Though it sure is reluctant to get the air out and oil in the cyls. got my hydraulic jack to lift blade a bit and work the actuator and was able to get the lift back to operating...the down pressure is still a bit reluctant to get the oil back there, once i get her outside to a bit of a ledge maybe i can get the blade down a bit further and get the oil into her like she should. right now she lift up about 4 to 6 inches so is enough to do grading but i like to have it lift that front end right on up and away! work in progress......course the rebuild is a nice tight fit too.
thanks for the tip on emptying the cyls!!
thanks guys

Re: jd440 ic hydraulic pump/hyd cylinder
Some of the systems of that era used plastic check balls in the control valve. The balls wear with time. If they wear enough to wander or stick they can total a pump. If your blade did not leak down then you had better check the control valve soon.

Re: jd440 ic hydraulic pump/hyd cylinder
mine is a 6 way control valve with 3 levers....where is this ball actually located???? is 1960 jd440 ic w/64 blade. only issue showing up is the down pressure on the newly rebuilt cylinder on the left side getting the fluid back in to the down pressure side of cyl., which by the way was working fine on the down pressure before the rebuild, i had problem with the lift side cup.
Re: jd440 ic hydraulic pump/hyd cylinder
Cycle the blade multiple times all the way up, and all the way down, the air will work out.

Re: jd440 ic hydraulic pump/hyd cylinder
It seems to have done the trick....tis a bit slower than i really like but may haps the next fluid change will get the aw32 and do better. I drove front end up on 6x6 and lowered blade to help get fluid into downside.
thanks for all the help
