1010 roller rock guard

Do I really need these on my 1010, I have nothing but dirt and sand here, no rocks. Some cement head gates, that needs to be dug out of an old irrigation ditch. I would like to just leave them off, 1- is because they are bent and 2- some of the bolts holding them on are broken off. Really can't see where I would need them.

Hi,

They do stiffen the entire track frame. I would straighten them and use new bolts to hold them on myself.

Bolts are broke off flush with lower rail. and the inner right rock guard there were only 2 bolts holding it on.

They brace the trackframes and were not an option, so were designed to be on at all times. Loaders without them will bend trackframes in fairly short order.

Pain in the behind job to get those broken bolts out but it really needs to be done my friend.Rails are fairly "light" and as Stan and Lavoy pointed out the guards are there to brace and prevent flexing and bending.
I've used a cutting rig to blow a hole through broken bolts and the pounded in an EZ out then backed out the bolts:had good luck about 75% of the time.The hole you burn allows for EZ out insertion and the heat usually breaks the rust bond on the threads.
Hard way is split the tracks,pull the rail group,flip it bottom side up and get out your drill,EZ outs, and penetrating oil.Big job either way.

I took 4 broken rollers off the right side, broke 7 of the 16 bolts that were holding on the rollers. Good thing it was just the heads of the bolts that broke off, so when I knocked the rollers off, I had 1/2 inch of the bolts exposed below the rail. I heated around bolts with torch until it was cherry red. clamped on good set of vice grips and worked bolts back and forth until I could screw them out of the rail. I have all the bolts removed from the outside rail, including the bolts for the rock guard. I have just 3 or 4 broken bolts left for the inside rock guard, I plan on welding nuts to the remaining broken bolts and see if I can get them out. I chased the treads in all bolt holes and bought all new grade 8 bolts to put rollers and rock guards back on.

My dad is always fussy about the length of bolts used in the track frames. The original bolts are only long enough to make it thru the track frame. Longer bolts corrode and often twist off when you try and remove them down the road.

Great to see your fixing it right. We always pull the track frame and flip it upside down to remove broken bolts, replace rollers, etc.

There are also spacers between the rock guards in between the rollers, make sure you put these in. We use regular pipe for the spacers.

While you are working on the undercarriage check all the crossmember bolts as well.

hello Kieth, i made a nice extra-heavy duty set since the old ones i had were bent and worn,,, was easier than straitening/rebuilding the old ones.
ya them bolts are a challenge for sure. i got everything redhot around the bolts and a for the ones i snapped, a large nut welded on , thats all after a week of pbblaster and 4' wrench, there was only one that i had to fill,drill,tap.
440icd/602/8a,,440icd/831/ripper,,440icd/831/3pt.,misc. 440 parts, i have 5 of these now, but i can stop anytime :cry:

Yep on the Anti-seize, I already have that and definitely going to use it.. Buddy that works on crawlers suggested the same thing.

I already have the new bolts and pipe cut for spacer. The old ones were pretty much rusted into, not much left of the bolts or spacers.
