steering problems on 440 icd

Post by jmarcarley » Fri Mar 23, 2018 3:51 pm

HI, I'm new here looking for information on my john deere 440icd. It doesn't want to steer all that well. I started it today it seem to steer to the left ok, until it warmed up then not so much.... to the left, it didn't want to steer at all but seemed to dog the engine down to where it would stall it. finally it went left a couple times then back to just dogging the motor down. does it need new bands? clutches? adjusted? I'm lost. thanks. John.

I'm sorry it steers to the left, but not so much to the right, it wants to kill the motor.

Hi,

If you pull back on the stick and it bogs the engine, the brake is applying without the clutch releasing. Might be out of adjustment. Might be a stuck steering clutch pack.

That is definitely adjustment problem....tho could also be stuck clutch....get book out and start adjustment procedures and follow closely. 440 steering lever needs to be out from dash 1 1/2 to 1 5/8 and throwout just touching the fingers. back off the brake band engaging finger bolt so is clearance..ie not applying the brakes while getting throwout bearing to touch the clutch fingers. once clutch touching, tighten the throwout bearing lockdown bolt...which you should have loosened first so that bearing can be moved to fingers....then adjust the engaging finger bolt down to touch band and then back that off 1/2 turn. Also find the slotted brake band adjusting bolt/nut tighten till firm, then back that off about 2 clicks..

Once that is done you should have steering back, unless there are internal problems...clutch fingers have been known to collapse and lock down, i also had my brake band break in half, these are old machine and old parts. Best check and see if any oils leaking in and polluting the brakes/clutchs too...if so will need replacing.

hopefully LAVOY will get it moved to early forum.

PS...edit profile and let us know what area you in city, state?

Hi,

And, what we mean by Stuck is that the throwout bearing will release the pressure plate but there is a film of rust on the surfaces of the steel discs Sticking them to the fiber discs. So, even with no pressure clamping them together, the Steels and the Fibers still drive power to the track.

But, you have to be certain that the pressure plate is releasing prior to the brake engaging first. So, you need to go thru the adjustment procedure first. Once you are sure of that, we can go into more regarding stuck discs and/or swollen fiber discs (which also will not release).....

All we know so far is that side is not releasing power prior to the brake band engaging the outside of the drum.
