40c Serial Number Tag

Post by fundytides » Wed Jul 04, 2018 5:13 pm

Does anyone know the size and type of rivets to use to hold the serial number tag on. The old rivets are broken off and since I have the side frame off for repairs, I want to drill out the old rivets and reattach the tag. I don't want to try to drill the holes into the casting. I would rather just drill out the remainder of the old rivets if I knew the size.

I am guessing at this; but I think they used screw nails (aka drive screws); many manufacturers used those to install metal tags. If you can see them broken off you may be able to tell the diameter if you lightly grind them flat to the housing. They can go in blind holes, as long as the holes are deeper than the screw length, so if you see the old holes they might not go clear through. McMaster Carr shows them as screw nails in the rivet section, many diameters and lengths.

Thanks Jim. I have some of the drive rivets you suggested but wasn't sure that they would "bite" into the cast iron of the center frame. I have sanded the area of the broken rivets but can't really can't see the outline of the broken rivet. I will just use a drill of appropriate size for the rivets I have.

You might use a high strength Loctite type product (red thread locker, or retaining compound) on them for insurance, if you want.
