440ic - found one - Questions..

Post by doc_dozer » Thu Nov 09, 2006 10:30 am

I called about this JD440 for sale. It's gas, 3pt, PTO. UC is 60%, pins apparently not ever rotated. Final drives have been rebuilt. Original paint. They wouldn't go under $6,000. It's almost 600mi from me so I have to ship it. Comments? I could certainly use the 3pt and pto...
Thanks,
Charley

Pretty good looking crawler. The rails are 1010 rails, so it has had tracks on it at sometime, maybe had other UC work at same time. Can they give you a parts list as to what was done on the finals? I have had a few rebuilt finals with old bearings, and beer can shims.

Still seems like a bunch of money to me but it is a good looking crawler. You can hit the Wisconsin State Farmer site at www.wisfarmer.com. There are two 350 listed this month at $6500 and $6250 and they would be about 200 mile closer if that helps.

Lavoy,

Unfortunately they didn't do the work. The crawler was a trade on a new tractor. I can call again to see if they will give me the farmers name or the name of the shop that did the work.
What is the difference between 1010 rails and 440's? ie. how did you know?

Bill, I live in Eastern TN, the two 350's are 200 miles further, and they are both loaders and I want a small crawler. Plus, they don't have the PTO and 3pt. which make this a little more interesting to me. I agree that it's a lot of money but those two items aren't cheap to add.

I do wish it was a diesel though..

Charley,
1010 rails are 4 bolt, 440 rails are two bolt. It is also possible that it has been converted to 350 rail, I can not see for sure.

Looks good but that is only the beginning with a crawler. Make them stand to anything they "say", they either get the receipts showing the parts used to rebuild the finals and such, or it is hear say.
What I find interesting, and I am a beginner, is that the books say that a crawler with a 3 point would only have a regular seat, not a deluxe seat like that one. It is not a deal stopper, but based on that, either the 3 point has been added or the seat changed. Help me out guys, you know much more than me about originality.
If you can determine what they say is true on the U/C, my vote would be to go for it.

The pads are backwards on that unit as well .Rember in forward the pad hits first then grousers set in. As they are the grouser sets first and turns 15 degrees before the pad sets .[This is hard on pins also] .No big problem though just turn the tracks around. It will give better traction and take less power to turn them .That gaser may need a little more forward help.Looks good though .Digitup.

Hello,
I'm not trying to start anything but the pads are on correctly. The
factory shop manuals and period photos show this. For single grouser
pads the grouser always touches the ground first.JimAnderson
