jd 440 icd air cleaner

Post by frozendozer » Mon Sep 10, 2018 11:03 pm

is there a way to clean the filter element on my oil bath air filter? In order to start the motor, I need to disconnect the hose between the blower and canister. When it starts, I then hook it back up.

I would say that you should clean it and refill it with a thin oil.

Hi,

Cleaning can be done by removing it and dunking it in and out of a pail of kerosene. But, you might do it with some light oil in the bath instead of 20 wt motor oil. It works by sucking oil up onto the screens when running, which collects crap, and then drains back into the cup when not running. A couple cups of light oil usually cleans them pretty good. Running fast with light oil can pull it into the engine, but stack smoke will tell you about that. ;)

Also, there is a Fill To line on the cup. Tends to get gunked over so you can't easily see it. Overfilling the cup leads to what you describe. Too much oil and air can't get by the oil. Pull the hose and it gets air, then while running you reconnect the hose and -flup- oil flies up the screens and now it is no longer too full. Until you turn it off.

You will lose the paint, but I clean them by running them through a wash cabinet. It will clean them spotless inside and out, but it also takes all the paint off. You also need to get WD40 or something on the steel wool immediately after drying to prevent corrosion (ask me how I know that one).
