Soon to restart on my 420C

Post by Lu47Dan » Fri Sep 14, 2018 2:03 pm

Since I have most of other projects done around here and am ready to go back into the trades. I will be returning to the restoration on my crawler.
I have one more project to do before the crawler, that is replacing the roof on the shop as it is leaking. Once that is done I can move my machines into the front part of the shop and have an open bay to work in.
There are a few things I have go decide on, one is what to do with the track chains. New pins and bushing, as the sprockets are good or convert to 350 sprockets and chains.
One question that needs answered is what is the height of my rails. Need to get the tracks rolled out and check that.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Dan.

For rebushing, I like to see at least a half inch of rail where the rollers ride on.

Okay, I have the rails and grousers rolled up on pallets . It will take my neighbors tractor to get them lifted up and unrolled.

Lavoy, I was digging in the old posts in this forum and found a thread called "All green crawlers". In your reply, you state that the "all green crawlers" were all 1956 model year. With serial numbers from 80,001 thru 94,818.
My crawler has a serial number starting with 92,8XX. Would that make mine an all green crawler also?
I was just wondering.

Thanks, Lavoy. :)
Now what am I going to do with the three gallons of yellow paint I bought for the track frames. I will find a few other things to paint with it.
Now to find a few pictures of one of them.

Hi,

Sheet metal is all green. No yellow stripe. The tracks are yellow, as were the wheels on the early 420 tractors.

Tracks are green, track frames, sprockets, and front idlers are yellow, so you still have some use for it.

Hi,

I was thinking 'track frames', but I see where I said only 'tracks'. I actually have no idea what they might have painted the tracks on the 40 or early 420. I know the Lindeman and MC were green. Later, they were yellow. But did that occur with the stripe? I have no idea.

In the end, just a little usage and the tracks have no paint at all. ;)

Tracks were never yellow other than industrial yellow crawlers. You see a lot of yellow and black on restorations, but are not correct.

Pondering..

Post by Lu47Dan » Thu Oct 04, 2018 9:40 am

Pondering while I am rebuilding the 420C, whether to go ahead and bite the bullet on switching over to 350 rails and sprocket rims. The bottom rollers all need replaced anyway, remember this is a five roller machine. I can get the 420 sprocket teeth removed on a CNC burning table. The owner of the table said all he would need is the new 350 sprocket rims.
I have held numerous welding certs for pipe, 6010 root/hot pass 7018 fill & cap, tig root / hot pass 7018 out, tig root out, 3G, 4 (? or 5)G and 6G positions. Can never remember those darn designations. :? So welding the new rim to the sprocket should not be too taxing.
I have the moving platen from a plastic injection molding press (60ton) , I plan on building a new welding table from it. It is about 4-1/2' X 5-1/2' weighs about 600# and is heavily ribbed on the back. I should have got one or two of the round tie rods the platen rode on but another guy already had dibbs on them. I should be able to build a base that will support the platen. The company that owned the press decided to scrap it, but the cost of getting it millwrights in to move it out of the plant was more than the scrap value was. One of the guys found another company to take the motor hydraulics and controls. Which left the frame the platens, etc. His dad wanted the front platen (stationary) for something in his wood shop. By the time it got to me the moving platen was all that was left. The platen is in a friends shop right now in dry storage all greased up.
Just pondering.....
