440 reverser

Post by deeretails » Sat Oct 06, 2018 9:02 am

Rebuilding a 440 reverser. Book calls for type 'A' transmission fluid. What is a substitute, can't find 'A' fluid.

Thanks,

Mark

When the use of automatics began the fluid for GM automatics was called Type A. Ford transmissions used Type F. Different friction coefficients. Lavoy or Stan may have more info but the Dextron II, Dextron III, etc. are the GM spec fluids that took Type A's place as transmissions and fluids improved. I used Dextron Type III in my 430 reverser. HYGARD or a equal might be ok but I can't say.

Hi,

I would not use ATF. I use regular tractor hyd fluid, which is as close as we get to Type A these days. I find HyGard makes them rather noisy as it is thinner.

Run HyGard or equivalent only.

Hi,

I should be a tad more clear. When I say hydraulic oil, I mean the modern transmission, gear and hydrauilc oil. Of which, Hygard is a brand name of John Deere. There are equivalents from other brands, some of which are of a higher viscosity than Deere's offering. The higher viscosity oils tend to make the spyder gears in the reverser run quieter than HyGard.

That said, that kind of product is what you need. You will not find a Type A out there anywhere.
