40C right final drive

Post by AllenS » Sat Oct 20, 2018 9:19 am

I have a 40c, and the right final drive housing had been cracked and welded up when I bought it. My problem is this, I can adjust the right steering lever and it will brake great, but only for about 45 minutes of hard work, then it needs to be adjusted again. What do you think is the problem?

Thanks.

Sounds like oil contamination, but if you can continually keep tightening it up, there is a larger mechanical issue.
Either way, you are looking at a tear down.

Yes, I'm sure it's mechanical. Winter is coming soon, so I'll put it in the shop, and tear it down. I had to work on the right final drive axle and put in a new bearing some years ago, so that's not a problem. I have a wood stove and plenty of wood. Any early suggestions about what I should look for.

Thanks, Lavoy.

You only mention that the brake needs readjusting after 45 minutes. Does that mean the clutch for that side is working OK? If it's only the brake, is the adjustment backing off and in need of attention. We need more info on exactly what's happening.
