1950 MC left track wont work!

Post by monzanick » Sun Oct 28, 2018 2:05 pm

So there I was, playing with my crawler in the mud(about 2-3"). I knocked down an old building then started backing away when my left track stopped working. Immediately, I thought it was a rock in the track. After shuffling it out of there, we found the track off the front idler. I loosened the adjusters, pried the track back on and tried again, no luck. After spraying it clean we noticed the axle spins, just not the hub/gear.

I gotta bring 3/4"drive home to pull the nut off the hub.
On a scale of 1-10 , how screwed am i?
I've been putting off splitting the track and repairing, replacing the worn out stuff(moving sucks btw).
Any chance it's a broken woodruff key?

The drive hub on the MC and early 40c are splined. If the axle is spinning inside the hub then the hub and shaft are toast.

I got the hub nut off(not really tight) and found the hub stripped out completely. Awesome. I'm gonna keep an eye out for a new hub. Tomorrow I'll hammer in some shim stock so I can get it to move on it's own again.

New hubs have been obsolete for quite a while, only hope is used. Usually you will have to replace axle and hub. I should have a set in a couple weeks, maybe less.

I just saw your reply after emailing you. The nut on the stripped side is 2.25" the other side is like 2" tho. Was there different shafts avail?

No, but there were some larger diameter nuts originally, I have seen both as well. Shaft is the same.

What Ralph says plus there are 2 different hubs to match the splines. May be able to change as a set but if you are only replacing the hub you can only use the one that matches the axle. According to my parts book the "early" was serial numbers up to 15150 and the "late" was 15151 and up. Don't know which one is which spline.
