440 crawler diesel engine installation

Post by deeretails » Sat Nov 10, 2018 6:43 am

Getting ready to install a 2-53 back into a 440 crawler with an 831 loader. As I was looking it over it seems like some time and effort might be saved if the radiator and related items were installed on the engine before the unit was but back in the chassis. Does this make sense, or am I overlooking something? Never done a 440 before, so any help appreciated.

I don't remember ever installing an engine with the radiator already installed. Seems like an easy way to damage the radiator and there may not be enough room to clear the trans. input shaft.

It works well on a gasser, not sure if it will work as well on the diesel, everything is that tighter.

I installed the engine assembly today with the accessories mounted, meaning radiator, fuel filter etc. All went well, except I didn't realize the skid plate had a slight upward bend in it, which caused interference with the engine oil drain plug. Dropped the skid plate about a 1/4" and the assembly went in like it was on rails. And now there's no wrestling with radiator hoses and those related items. Tomorrow I'll hook up the electrical system and it's ready to go. Wouldn't hesitate to go this way again.
