420c not shifting into gear
Re: 420c not shifting into gear
I agree, it has to come apart one way or the other. If all you are concerned about is breaking free the main clutch, that might do it. If you are going to fix all the issues, no sense wasting any more time with camera or anything else, it will all be fixable once you have it apart.
If you have any thoughts of needing to work on it again, or anything else, Harbor Freight makes a reasonably prices over head hoist A-frame.

looking at something like this... https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/h ... 88402.html
or this...
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/t ... 17221.html
I figure I can pull the blade off the loader, guessing there is enough space between the tracks to get the legs of this thing pushed in through the front...

Pulled many engines out of crawlers with one of those.

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
how much does the engine weigh do you think?
my plan is shaping up to be, start 420, blade up, engine shutdown, then start in gear, use steer levers to get it out of barn. remove blade from loader.
prepare inside of barn, lay down 4x4 beams for tracks, 3/4 inch ply in between the beams to create a floor for the crane to roll on. maybe double 3/4" since the floor is dirt...
once barn is prepared, reverse dozer back in (using gear shift not reverser) over beams...
this is the floor plan I have so far:

Are most engine hoists going to fit between the tracks do you think?

Guessing 750lbs for the engine.

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
Hope this doesn’t come to late. I had to remove the engine from my 420c in the woods last year. Because I usually look at problems backward instead of lifting the engine out I let it down. The equipment used,a six foot 2x12 a floor jack and 2 comealongs also some 9/16x8” bolts with the heads cut off. Put the 2x12 on the ground under the engine with the floor jack and a board under the oil pan. I had the bucket raised and secured and used the loader arms with the two comealongs attached to the engine and the arms in a trapeze arrangement. With everything on the front cleared out of the way Itook out 2 bellhousing bolt and installed the 9/16 bolts as guides. After removing the rest of the bolts I slid the engine forward off the input shaft and slowly lowered it with the jack while balancing with the comealongs. When the jack was lowered completely I took up the tension with the comealongs, removed the jack and set the engine down on the 2x12. Used a chain around the 2x12 and slid the engine out with my truck. Total time about 20minutes.
I am also betting that you will find the pilot bearing rusted to the input shaft.
Good luck,
Mark

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
thats amazing!
so the 8 inch bolts were to guide the engine out so that it didnt put pressure on the input shaft?
did you take any photos?

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
You are correct about the bolts. I did not take any pictures,I was working alone. Also put it back together the same way. Again it was about a half hour to put it back in

"installed the 9/16 bolts as guides."

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
So I went back up to the 420 dozer, which is in a remote location as I stated previously. We went up with every possible tool and with a lot of knowledge gathered from you all. Also had a new clutch assembly from Lavoy. Jim and others you guys were very helpful. My friend and I were there for a few days ready to split the thing. Talking with Jim beforehand I had told him that I disconnected the brake rod from the brake pedal but didnt know there was a brake rod on the clutch side also to disconnect. The goal was to see if the brake engagement was hindering the clutch disengagement since the pedals were frozen together. Got both linkages disconnected this time around and we found that the clutch was not being hindered.
I raised the blade and started in gear with the steering clutches engaged and found that the clutch disengaged. We did some tests on the clutch and found that it disengages at about 2-3 inches forward on the clutch pedal. We also found that when the clutch disk does stick, pulling back on both steering clutches "resets" or jostles the clutch disk loose from the clutch plate (or flywheel).
in conclusion, we didnt split it after all, we figured it would be better to just jostle the steering clutches and deal with the sticking clutch, which didnt happen as often this time around, and wait till the clutch fully fails before splitting this thing and potentially running into other issues in that process.
I was able to clear out a big old fallen tree from the road and scrape everything into piles. Im so happy this thing is working again.
Thank you all for your help especially Jim and Lavoy who took my phone calls and guided me through this.
