Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
Doing an engine clutch replacement. Flywheel has a few odd cracks in it. Anything to worry about? These cracks are on the engine side of flywheel. No cracks on clutch side.
Also looking for the distance from newly turned flywheel clutch face to where the pressure plate mounts. I know that after turning the face of flywheel I will have to machine some off where the pressure plate mounts.

That is a new one on me, not really sure what to tell you, but I guess I would not run it.

Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
I'm with Lavoy on this one.I have seen many dump truck flywheels with surface cracks on the disk side. They were still useable but what you have there is in my opinion is scrap metal.

Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
I just don't know. If the crack(s) is a manufacturing flaw, I'd probably run it. If it's something that has been caused by use, I'd scrap it.

you say 440 gmc....i have to assume you talking diesel...i sure wuldnt want to be sitting near blowing apart flywheel like that.
Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
Thanks for the replies....I am going with it. It's been machined and I am waiting on parts from the partsman. I agree with gregjo, manufacturing flaw.

Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
Absolutely not a manufacturing flaw, it is cracked. I have never in 30 years seen a flywheel cracked through like that. When or if it fails, it will be catastrophic and very likely hurt the operator or anyone within 50 feet of the crawler. Why would you risk it?

Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
I must not be seeing the flaw well enough. I'm seeing, what appears to be, a scratch on the surface. After it has been turned, if the flaw/crack is still there, I'd be with Lavoy and I'd scrap it. If there's any chance on it grenading: why risk it?

Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
Hi,
That last pic clearly shows that this a stress crack. It will only grow larger. When it grows large enough, the flywheel will come apart in a manner I refer to as 'catastrophic self-disassembly'. It will look like the turbine wheel from the 1989 Sioux City air disaster when it does. The one where they found what was left of it in a corn field after the farmer ran into it with a corn head.
Lavoy is correct that someone is likely to get hurt. Replace that thing and use it for a lamp base.

If you weld an old GM 14 Bolt brake drum and a 3' piece of 2" schedule 40 pipe on top of that it would make a great bench grinder or vice stand.
Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
Hydrogeo, I think it would make a great boat anchor.

Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
I would have it Mag Particle checked to be safe. I've seen grinding/polishing hide cracks when the surface is taken away. Mag particle or dye checking after grinding/polishing a suspect area, when chasing cracks, is a standard practice for a reason in the industrial and power production fields. A machine shop should be able to do that. It only takes a few minutes.
Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC
And I was looking forward to digging in 4 feet of snow on a flywheel hunt!
