Jd 420c phase 1

Post by jelfert » Thu Mar 14, 2019 5:12 pm

Just brought home a 420c. Runs really good. It has a steering problem. Pulling the left lever all the way and the left track stops and the right keeps going and pulls it around. Pull the right lever back hard and it just comes to stop. Pull lightly on the right lever and she tries to slowly turn. I notice when I pull the right lever, the foot brake/clutch lever goes down. This doesn’t happen when I pull on the left lever. I don’t have a shop manual yet.

If you pull the right lever and the crawler comes to a stop, the left clutch is shot, oil soaked, or out of adjustment.

Ok...so why is the clutch pedal and brake pedal moving together together in a Depressed motion when I pull the right lever? Should the two pedals move separately from each other? Why are they moving at all when I pull the right lever?

Sounds like a couple things. The brake and/or linkage on the right are out of adjustment causing the brake pedal to move, which it shouldn't when you pull the right steering lever. The other problem is the pedal shafts have stuck/seized together. The brake pedal moving is likely disengaging the engine clutch, since you say the clutch pedal is moving with it. Pedals need to be freed first and then linkages adjusted.

Yes, when I depress the clutch pedal, the brake pedal moves with it. Must be seized together.

Yes on the shafts being seized together. As for the pedal moving when you pull the right lever. Both brakes work together to stop the crawler when the pedal is pushed. You didn't say your brake pedal moves when you pull the left lever. Both brake linkages hook to the same shaft. That says to me the right brake or linkage adjustment isn't right, or the pedal would not move when you pull that lever. So you likely have two issues in play.

When you're pulling the right lever hard, you're disengaging the master clutch, separating the engine from the transmission.

As for a manual. The 420/430 service manual (both in the same manual) SM2019 refers to the 40 series manual (SM2013) for some info. Send Lavoy an email at postmaster@jdcrawlers.com , he can help you out and be sure you get the info you need. The operator's manual is OM T42757. You can access the parts catalog, PC505, free on-line at https://jdparts.deere.com/servlet/com.d ... anguage=19 . Watch for serial number breaks and that you are looking a page ID'd for crawler in the manuals, as they cover the wheel tractors as well. HTH

Pulling the left lever does not move the clutch and brake pedal. Only when I pull the right lever.

I'd say to adjust the steering brakes and clutches. Also you need to free up the master clutch and foot brake pedals so they operate independently.

I disconnected the brake linkage from the pedal. Now it steers correctly on both sides. Now to unseize the clutch pedal/brake pedal shaft ...
