440IC Wont run w/o choke 1/2 on
My 440IC wont stay running without the choke 1/2 on all the time. I have gone thru the carb and all looks great in there. I have sprayed carb cleaner all around the intake looking for a leak, none found, stayed running the same. I did go thru the distributor and found the advance stuck, Removed and cleaned up the advance, reinstalled and adjusted points and timing. still the same. Has anyone had an internal leak say from the exhaust side of the manifold into the intake side where it wraps around the intake runner. It is the only thing I can think of at this point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Buck.

Needing the choke on means too much air/not enough fuel. Right? If there's no adjustment screw that helps, there's possibly a blockage in the carb. Have you adjusted the float level? Allowing a bit more fuel into the bowl may be all it needs.

Did you pull the center long nozzle out? Often times there is some blockage in there.

I've had problems with bad gas on several pieces of machinery that I don't use all the time, including my 40c. The gas now is just horrible. I took a chance and bought an inexpensive Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner when I had a 25% off coupon. It's been a great investment. I mix 50/50 simple green and water and it takes all the varnish right off jets, floats, etc. Parts come out looking new.

Have you played with the load jet? I'll second Lavoy's thoughts too. There are some pretty small ports in the center tube that plug easily. Good luck. Paul

You say "won't stay running". Does that mean it dies at idle or is it affected the same at all rpm's?

Re: 440IC Wont run w/o choke 1/2 on
I have gone thru the carb completely and did put all the parts thru the ultrasonic cleaner. I do believe that I have it cleaned, but have missed things in the past so I may have to go back thru it.
I do remember cleaning the long center tube.
I have adjusted both the idle and load jets, the load jet does respond but the idle one has very little effect on anything
it will die at idle and up to about 1/2 throttle without choke on 1/2 way.
at wide open throttle it does not want to run, just pops and bangs like it is lean.
my main reason for asking on the intake manifold is that it is cracked externally on the little runners that go from one exhaust port to the other and it runs right behind and is part of the intake runner just above the carb. someone welded the right side before I purchased it and I welded the left side recently just to cut down on the noise.
I just replaced the carb with the one that came with the crawler when I purchased it. the one that was on it was off of a 4 cylinder case combine I believe. that carb had the same issue but was much worse than with this carb that I rebuilt.
I did check it out and it is a correct carb for this engine also, the previous owner changed them out trying to fix this problem.
I wasn't going to replace the intake right away but being it is cracked externally anyway It may be a good place to start.

Two different jets on two different carburetors, clean, unclean, same symptoms. I think you are on it. Replace the manifold.

Here is a prior thread regarding 440 carb problems. May be good reading, maybe something to help.

If you have a cracked intake manifold, you could be drawing air in thru the crack and it's suppling too much air to the combustion mixture. Choking it shuts down the air intake, creating a richer mixture and keeping it running.

Marvel, zenith and stromberg updraft carburetors all have a similar problem as they age. Because of the way these carbs are built they tend to warp at the joint between the upper half and the bowl. This warppage can cause an air leak at this joint that is very hard to identify. My common practice now is to check the halves on a surface plate and lapping the surfaces to straighten out. I haven't seen an updraft carburetor in that last 20 years that didn’t need some trueing up.
