40c steering problem

Post by AllenS » Tue Apr 16, 2019 10:12 am

I adjusted my right side steering/breaking. Backing out of the shop everything worked like it was new, however, going forward and pulling back on the right lever, I hear a groan in front of the transmission and the crawler wants to stop. Any ideas what is wrong?

Sounds like you misadjusted the right clutch/brake. The clutch must release first then, as the lever is pulled farther, the brake is applied.

Are you talking about the brake adjusting set screw? I thought about that, and will loosen it up today, if I can get out there before the rain starts. Thank you for your response, gregjo.

Before I go any farther, let me say this: on my 40c, the left final drive is off of a 420, and the right final drive is a 40c, however, the right final drive had broken some time before I bought it and was welded up. If that matters.

Now, I just provided more slack by loosening the brake adjusting set screw and backed it off, and it worked better, but there is still a little groan sound when using the right brake when going forward. Come to think about it, the groan sound been there since I bought the 40c. Still the right brake works great when backing up, but isn't as good braking while going forward.

I would like to get the right brake working better.

As far As the steering clutches, it is an adjustment issue. The groan sounds like the engine clutch slipping.
