The front idler shafts and roller shafts should have 3/4"-16 thread.
You can find some of such info in the JD parts catalogs available on line. Your parts catalog is PC 862. Find the part number for what you are looking at in the catalog then go back to the home page and do a part number search. Many times there is info on the part, or in this case the nut that threads onto it, there when you search it. I did that to check my memory on the shaft thread.

the 2 shafts mic 1.175 with 12 threads to the inch. I find no listing for them.

I see where my previous post is likely in error. You say 1953 vintage, so your machine is a 3 roller machine? Those are different from the 4 and 5 roller shafts I looked at. I don't have info for the 3 roller shafts. 12 pitch is a unified standard fine thread and can be on multiple diameter shafts just as 8 TPI is a unified standard coarse thread. Some here will likely have the info for you, sorry for the mix up.

I don't believe it is a standard thread, and it tapers somewhat like pipe thread does. You will just have to duplicate it.

Thanks. It does seem tapered.
one side tensioning wheel on the carriage had a broken hub which I have had welded and remachined. the retainers have a 1 1/4 hole with the threads down in it which is worn so I will bush it. I assumed the tapered threads were from wear.

No, they are tapered from the factory.
