Clanking trans

Post by Jirving43 » Tue Jun 11, 2019 3:27 pm

In my 59 440 ICD (Studebaker powered NO REVERSER) I have a clanking noise in R,1,2,3 gears in forward and reverse.. All gears look ok when I pull the shifter cover off.. Any ideas?

Is the clanking related to ground speed or does it change with changing gears (in other words: Is it related to ring gear or transmission)? If it is related to ground speed then the problem is probably in the ring gear. If it changes with the gears it is probably transmission. If it is transmission the frequency will help you determine which shaft (gear) or bearing. Input shaft and gear will vary with rpm regardless of gear. If 4th is straight-through (I do not recall) and doesn't clank the look at lower shaft.

So it does it in 1,2,R the clunk is one time per revolution of the trans input shaft, both front and rear bearings and races on input shaft are new. The gears in case have some wear but nothing terrible, no broken teeth and neither of the other transmission shafts feel loose.

Sorry, but the only thing I know that turns at the speed of the input shaft IS that shaft. It runs all the way to the flywheel, so the sound may be originating elsewhere. BTW, there are two revolutions of the input shaft for every "pop". Don't know why it doesn't change with 1,2, and R and is not there in other gears. Would suspect the cluster gear if it was only in those gears but changed with gear.

Is the noise there when in neutral? Is the noise there while in the mentioned gears if you pull back either or both steering levers?

Clunking at the rate of rotation of the input shaft would be at least 600 times per minute at idle. I am thinking you are not hearing the input shaft.
