2010 steer clutch assembly problem
Hi all. I am replacing My 2010C steering clutches and cant get the clutch assembly to come out far enough out to seat snap ring because it is hitting against the casting. I'm lacking less than 1/4" to get the snap ring in correct place. Mine has the 3 pins and tapered end set screw. I am assuming that the snap ring goes into the recess on the end of the clutch driving shaft, and the set screw holds tension on it ( or am I seeing it wrong?)
When I assembled clutch with a metal plate first and continued fiber / metal stack in the same pattern as it came apart. The serial # is 38193. I am going by page SM 2037 2-64 at bottom of page, figure 150-15-2-Exploded view of steering clutch. I measured how far the shaft went in without the clutch in, and get the same dimension with the clutch in. Where am I going wrong?

Are you using the correct number of metal/fiber discs?

After carefull measurements I am sure that the shaft IS going all the way in. I will pull clutch assembly (AGAIN) and dis-asemble it to see what wont let hub come out over the snap ring

I'm not sure but, I'm thinking there should be 8 fiber and 7 steel. Seems like if you have 8 steel you'd end up with steel riding against steel at one end of the "clutch pack".signweld@yahoo.com wrote: ↑Thu Jul 11, 2019 1:58 pmYes, 8 of each just like came out of it.

MY Wrong!!! After checking JD parts list, I see that the 2010 does use 8 of each. I guess I was thinking of the 450 which, I think uses 8 and 7.gregjo1948 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2019 4:05 amI'm not sure but, I'm thinking there should be 8 fiber and 7 steel. Yes, the first steel plate goes against the steel inside the brake drum.

SOLVED. IM RUNNING ON STUPID. There was a part in the deep hole going into the differential. It was a short heavy spring with a disc on each end.
Didn't see it with the flashlight. found it with a magnet.

i assume that spring had something to do with applying tension to the shaft for that quarter inch? i haven't pulled 2010 steering tho may have to in future.

That is what I think too. I also wondered why the elaborate setup instead of just the spring. I also see in the manual where it says "push shaft into position against the spring and tighten setscrew to lock snap ring in place"
Re: 2010 steer clutch assembly problem
Steel plate 1st is correct for serial #'s below 42001. 42001 and above, composition facing goes in first, against the brake drum, followed by alternating steel plates and composition disks.
