Starter Issue 1952 MC Crawler

Post by jacksonvine » Fri Jul 26, 2019 10:14 am

My starter bendix does not fully engage the ring gear on the motor. Pulling the starter lever it sounds like the bendix just spins or sounds like it barely engages the ring gear, other times it just spins when attempting to start. Help

you will need to take it out and check it with a different battery to see just what the bendix is doing, it may well be an issue with the battery or you may need to rebuild your starter. also the pull switch contacts on the inside of starter may need replaced, i had same problem with my 40s wheeled and the contacts were the problem, after 60 years we all get worn a bit too!!!! also see that it (bendix) is lubed (lite oil) and moving freely

My mt was doing the exact same thing.pulled starter found too much fore and aft movement on the armature.shims added on cover end and its been working ok.Also check condition of ring gear on flywheel when your starter is off.
