Any Ideas? 420 Will Not Move….

Post by mccann316 » Mon Dec 04, 2006 7:54 am

I just changed the fluids in my 420 and was driving it up to put it in the building for the winter and it stopped moving. It didn’t make any type of noise or anything it just acted like it popped out of gear or something. It free wheels fine and doesn’t make any type of noise in any gear or with the clutch in or out. I pulled the shifter cover and the lever doesn’t seem to have popped out and it shifts through the gears fine. It just does not move like it is in neutral. Any ideas?

Also it has no reverser..........

Thanks,
Ryan

Sounds like the propeller shaft may have stripped. When I bought mine, that was the case but I knew that before I bought it. Splines inside shaft at transmission end were stripped. Not easy job to replace it. Also could be several other things such as input shaft to transmission broken.

My guess would be clutch disk as it would probably make the least amount of noise when it failed. Was it slipping in the last few weeks? Throwout bearing sticking in the out position but you'd feel that in the clutch pedal. Just seems like a broken shaft would have made noise under load when it went.

That is what has me confused. I have been using the dozer regularly right along all summer. It has been working great and I have used it a lot and pushed some heavy material to the point where it would either be spinning or I could stall the motor. It was working great, made no noise ever. When this happened I was driving it down a roadway, not under any load at all, blade up, even going downhill. If something broke it made absolutely no noise, more like something came unhooked? although I am not sure what that would be, or it is somehow in neutral but the shifter seems to be switching gears?

Take the cover back off and see if your main shaft is turnining when you let the clutch out then you can figure out which direction you need to go. Good luck

I took the cover off the top of the transmission and started it up. Nothing is turning in the transmission regardless of clutch position. I also tried the PTO and that does not work either. What would the next step be? How would I diagnose this further? Is there a cover I can pull of to see if there is a problem with the main clutch? Thanks again.

If you don't have movement in the transmission... it's good and bad news. Good news is it is in front end (clutch or driveshaft issue); bad news is you'll have to pull the engine to do any of the repair. I don't think there is anywhere you can peep at it.. nor does it matter. You'll have to pull the engine to fix it so might as well dive in. Just my opinion.

Anyone have any interest in buying this machine? I have done what I need to do with it and I don't really have the time or feel like getting into the repairs............

Not sure what it is worth? It has a pretty tight undercarriage and strong running motor. It has a canopy and winch on the back (not original, came from something else). I can get some pics if interested. My number is 518-872-1815

Problem was the machine actually has a reverser (didn't realize external linkage and handle is missing and it jumped into neutral position. It was unhooked because it must have broken at one time and some gears are missing so only has forward not reverse with reverser. I am looking for parts if I can find them. See separate post.
