Took the top off the transmission. The shifting forks and gears all looked good. What should I do next? Do I leave the top off and turn the motor over to see if the input shaft is turning? Sorry for all the stupid questions I am as green as it gets with this

It stops grinding when I push in the clutch then starts again when I let the clutch out. Does that mean the clutch is still working and I need to look for something else?

Re: 1960 John Deere 440 crawler help
I assume you mean it is grinding in neutral with the cover on. And by grinding you mean like putting it in gear with the clutch out. You need to see if any shaft is vertically or horizontally "loose". The best way to do this is with a hook bent into a welding rod. Hook each shaft (with the cover off) and see if it moves. There should be no visible (>about .015" ) movement. If there IS NO movement then, with the cover still off, slide the 2@R gear into 2 (rearward). At idle, let out the clutch and observe. Be ready to push the clutch in or you may get an oil bath.

Re: 1960 John Deere 440 crawler help
It is not "going" into gear, or when shifted into gear it does nothing, there is a difference, and you need to be more specific when trying to diagnose based on description. Do you have a service manual for your crawler, you are going to need it.

Not sure how we got from "pops out of gear" to "clutch is shot" but Lavoy is the best source of quality parts.

This site has a dedicated picture server. You can read about it on the Messageboard Q&A and Announcements board. Info should be the fifth and sixth posts down. You need to send Lavoy an email at postmaster@jdcrawlers.com to set up an account with a user name and password. In the meantime if you email the photos you want posted to me, I will post them for you. Send me a PM if you do and I'll PM you an email to send them to.
