Oil on brake band and clutch disks

Post by 2010OWNER » Sun Oct 06, 2019 5:59 pm

I'm rebuilding a 3325 winch for use on my 2010. I just opened it up and found the clutches and brake oil soaked.
On the old Series 20 winch, I had good luck heating things with a propane torch and soaking in denatured alcohol when the pressure plate would spew brake fluid all over everything.
Does anyone have a different process they have used successfully?
Yes, I know it is best to buy new clutch disks and a brake band, but spending another $1800 just isn't in the budget.
Thanks.

I just rebuilt an 8-a winch. I relined the brake band and clutch pads for $320. Call Asheville clutch and brake in N.C. should be good to go as long as your bands are in good shape

I have a miniature electric oven that I have been able to cook most of the oil out of a set of track clutch discs (definitely an outdoor activity). Be careful not to overdo it, fiber discs may fall apart.

Thanks.
I'm going to try baking them around 300 degrees for a half hour or so...just have to wait for the wife to be gone to town for awhile.

If it doesn't work out I'll go the relining route.

If you decide to replace them. check with Lavoy on the discs, he might have or be able to get those. I think those are easier replaced than relined. The brake band relining would be an viable option for it, Lavoy might have a source for that as well if you don't. He may be able to get the seals as well.
