440 loader quit moving
My brother was using my 440 track loader and after going in reverse he shifted back into first gear and the machine quit moving. This machine is 4 hours away at my camp in West Virginia. I went down that weekend to look at it and the clutch pedal feels normal, you can shift into all gears with or without the clutch pedal. There is a light clanging noise from the forward clutch area when you let the clutch pedal out and it goes away when you push the clutch pedal back in. What does this sound like to you experts ? I have changed out a few clutches in cars and tractors but nothing like this with the loader on. I did rebuild both final drives a few years back.
thanks for any advice,
Duane

Re: 440 loader quit moving
If your loader has a reverser then you may have an adjustment issue with the forward clutch in the reverser. If your 440 has no reverser then you will need to track down what broke. When you say that you can shift the trans with or without the clutch pedal is that with the engine running? Before assuming a main clutch failure I would recomend putting the trans in neutral with the engine off and pulling the top cover with the shifter off.You can look in to see the gears and crank the engine over, ignition off to see if the gears move.If the gears rotate it most likely not the clutch. If you don't see any damage to the trans gears ,it could be an issue with the ring and pinion set.

Re: 440 loader quit moving
thanks for the reply. I will pull the cover and check it out. It does not have the reverser. I was going thru the gears with the engine running.
Re: 440 loader quit moving
Then likely broken clutch disc, or stripped splines in the prop shaft.

Re: 440 loader quit moving
If your loader originally had a reverser and the internals were removed then it could be that the reverser input shaft was used.If it was then it is to short to last as it has less than a half inch of engagement in the coupling at the trans input.

How do you reverse such a thing, Jim?
Re: 440 loader quit moving
The transmission has reverse in it, separate from the reverser.
Re: 440 loader quit moving
Make sure none of the pins in the linkage didn’t break on the reverser before you tear it apart

Re: 440 loader quit moving
I recently had a Kubota 4x4 B6200 tractor w/loader come in that ran great but wouldn't move either direction. It made no unusual noises or smell like burnt clutch disc. Turned out that the spline in the clutch disc were completely stripped smooth and the propeller shaft spline was worn down about 50%. My theory is, bashing into something with the loader and coming to a sudden stop was too much force for that little spline to handle.
