420C alive again!!
After having to put in new propeelr shaft, replace center housing, rebuild carb, and a few other things my'56 420C is now back alive. Pushed some scrap iron into a pile at friend's garage with it yesterday. Still have to put a few things such as grille, bellypan and grille protector back on as well as new seals in hyd. cylinders and then repaint. Can't decide if I want to paint it JD Green and Yellow or go back with the industrial Yellow that Miss. Forestry Comission had it painted. Any thoughts?

Chicken Man,
I know exactly how you are feeling. I'm only slightly ahead of you in the resurrection process, also a '56 420c. I'm still finding things that need fixed, but I do find myself riding around on it with sort of a smug expression. Coupled with my 4600 with loader, they make a pretty good little toy construction outfit. Then again, I am just sort of playing around.
Congratulations.

Good evenin and I also have an early 420 mine is also painted industrial yellow by the Alabama forestry folks. One of these days I intend to give the old girl a new dress and I think that I will give her back her original colors..... you can see the original paint comming through the yellow in lots of places now. just my thoughts.

420 color
chickenman.
A good way to find out what color the machine came from the
factory with is to contact the John Deere Two cylinder club.If you
give them the serial number they for a modest fee will provide you
with what amounts to a build sheet for that machine. This includes
basic specs like number of rollers ,pad width, optional equipment
and color.I had them do my 430s and for about $15.00 each got
the build specs for them.It is nice to know just how they came
from the plant.JimAnderson

Thanks for the suggestion Jim, but one problem--no serial number. I know from the location of the missing plate it is below 100,001, which makes it eary '56. Working with JD to trace original number from some other numbers on it. Looks like I will have to get those verified by a JD territoral mgr., notarized and some othe things. May get complicated.
