440ic gas

Post by gaspumpsam » Fri Nov 15, 2019 9:50 am

440 gas, 5 speed, no reverser, 442172 serial.
Found bull gear had 3 major cracks from years ago, someone machined a collar, and staked it in place, ( very ingenious)
Now it needs major help, bull gear and hub/axle, bearings seals etc.
Found steering plates rusted together(6 metal,7 fibre) looks like they have very little wear, but rusty now.
My question would be- if I have to replace discs, hubs etc, should I update clutches to later serial ones( 7 and 8 discs)
What else would would have to be done( if anything)
Lavoy do you have necessary parts? Do you have bearing seal kit for finals, Also do you have brake band lining kit?

Forgot to put in this is RH final drive. Haven’t counted teeth on bull gear and pinion, to see if I have early or late serial number ones. Will do that today.

Should have everything in stock.
You can't upgrade to the later clutch without changing out brake drum. No real gain, just added cost.

Got my little jewel 99% dismantled. Found LH final is toast, RH is good ( will replace brgs and seals) both sides clutch/ brake linkage and bell cranks rusted and worn out. Both clutch assemblies rusted and frozen, steer clutch throw out brg ramp assembly cracked. Trans bearings good, but low gear cluster brgs worn , not sure if input shaft is toast, other parts of trans seem good.
Clutch/ brake shaft thru clutch housing seized solid. Have put gallons of WD 40 on it, will try again today to free it up, then will have to cut!!
Like all major restorations, I will start with redoing trans, then clean and paint/ replace necessary parts, and assemble in order.
Don’t think I will be plowing snow with it, this winter!
I believe someone on this site( maybe Jim B) caption- “there is no cheap crawler” I think I found out where he got that from!!!
There is a major amount of “rust” dust thruout this machine, In compartments where there is no oil, outside parts are in super shape/ condition, maybe because it came from a property beside a huge lake( 110 km long) humidity always high??, for its whole life??
Will put all parts in storage trailer today, then start collecting!! I know what will be on my Xmas wish list!!

I can't take credit for that line, its Stan Disbrow's. I will say I have quoted him a few times to guys who thought they got a wonderfully cheap crawler.
