Struck valve

Post by lcfrace » Tue Nov 19, 2019 6:47 pm

My 1010 loader sat for about a year. It run well when parked in my building. It would not start after that. After a couple checks it had no compression in one cylinder. I remove the valve cover and their is no oil flow from the one lifter. It is also puking thru the air intake. What would make that valve /lifter stick. Any help would be appreciated on this problem. Thanks

Sounds like rust to me. I would think that the other cylinders may be low on compression also. I think it should run on 3 cylinders. You never said if it is gas or diesel. If diesel, have you been using starting fluid? What is it "puking" thru the air intake? If there is an intake valve stuck open, there will be air pushing back thru the air intake.

It is gas. The other cylinders were low to. Is there anything I can do without pulling the oil pan off? I think you are right that a intake valve is stuck open.

Ok, it is gas. To clear up nomenclature and determine just what is stuck: when you remove the valve cover you are looking at valves and springs, the rocker arm shaft assembly and push rods. The lifters (aka tappets) are down in the block at the lower end of the push rods, out of sight. 1. Is just the valve stuck open, so that the rocker that moves that valve comes away from the valve stem, more than the normal valve lash, as the engine turns over? 2. Is the rocker arm stuck on the shaft so it doesn't move (in this case the push rod would drop away from the adjusting screw as the engine turns over)? 3. Do the valve, rocker arm, and push rod not move as the engine turns over (this would indicate the lifter is stuck in the block)? Knowing just what engine is being discussed and what part(s) is not moving should help get you better answers of possible fixes.

What is the compression on the other cylinders?
