I have been watching that as well. As a general rule, I would call the about double what they are worth, but if two people want it bad enough, then I guess it will go for that. I know one of the bidders, and given the price they ask for stuff, I guess they can afford it.

Okay, let's look at this a little more. The seller is in PA, the high bidder as of now has pa in his bid handle, and I know one of the other bidders, and they are a dealer in PA. I think the price on this is no different than the price on the MC that is discussed here as well, BOGUS!

Ya the same guy has the 420 for sale too ,last night it was $5500 with 4 days to go.I don't know but the price seems a bit high to me for the condition it is in,not saying it is bad but sure isn't showroom cond.If this is the going price ,well great cause the ones I have must be worth a lot more than I thought they were.I found the link upstairs in the shop today,it looks like it was painted by someone ,we got it with the crawler 20+ yrs ago and never used it and looks like it has never been used before that.Might think of selling it. At a thousand dollars plus a pop, I've got to get into the old crawler top link business.

I've got to pay more attention when I'm at the tractor shows. I had no idea that this was becoming the next big money maker since the dotcom bust.

It does make you wonder when you see goofy stuff going on on eBay. That's two really odd Deere crawler auctions in as many weeks. Buyer beware. :?

It is no secret to those in the know that live auctions will have "ghost" bidders sometimes. You see the auctioneer nodding and raising the bid, but for the life of you, you cannot see anyone that is bidding, other than the sucker that is about to pay too much.
Online auctions have no real way to prevent this from happening. Know what you are bidding on, what the real value is. Hey, if it is a toothpick and you want to pay $1,000 for it, fine. But be sure to contact me because I will save you several dollars on your next toothpick purchase.

Andrew,
No, I don't, I am short one for my new 420 as well. Not a real bid deal, I won't use the factory top link any more, not when I can break an aftermarket for $50. Only want one so that if I want to, I can put it on for show.

Anybody notice that there was a 430 grille on E-bay that also brought big money? I notice that it too was in PA, and the high bidder was one of the people that were bidding up the top link that is also likely in PA. IF the high bidder on that top link was legitimate, he got taken for a $700 ride and doesn't know it.

Toplink on E-bay

Post by JimAnderson » Sun Dec 17, 2006 9:19 am

Lavoy,
I had that grill on my watch list.I showed it to my wife when the bid
was around $500.00 and told her I wouldn't be suprised to see it go for
over $700.00.Even pieces of 430 grills are high with tops going for
over $200.00. I guess it's a sellers market with 430 grills.
The toplink shocked me.A guy in Texas had one for sale last year
on Yesterdays Tractors asking $600.00 I think.I thought that high
but over a thousand is nuts.Did the 420 this guy had meet reserve?
It looked as though he didn't really want to sell it but for the right price
you could have it.
I read somewhere that someone is reproducing 430 grill bottom
sections. If this is true do you know who it is?I have one that is a mess
and would like to replace it.JimAnderson

I will bet you the price of the top link that all three were bid in, or there was another purpose to the auction. I have my theories, but won't speculate.
Wilson's was making bottoms in the past, but marginal at best.

Unfortunately Ebay seems to have become scam central. When you see an item bid up to 400-500% in just a matter of minutes and then as soon as someone different bids $0.50 higher the rest of the bidders take a powder. Like Lavoy said, know what the realistic price is, know what you're willing to pay and stick to that. I uncovered one scam about a month ago for a 1998 Jetts TDI advertised by two different individuals from two distant states (Florida and Montana) using the same pictures and screen format. Turns out neither owned the car. I guess they were just hoping for the "down payment within 48 hrs of the auction closing". Too bad but definitely a sign of the times.

Scott,

I too shut two scammers down on eBay that had a 440 with 831 loader. One was in TX, the other in AZ. They had different pictures of the same crawler, but "old eagle eye" figured them out.
EBay is attempting to try to minimize the scams but it is hard to do. Think about this, if Nigerians can keep fooling people with their half baked stories and offering MORE than the asking price, imagine what eBay has to try to clean up.
The smarter the buyer, the harder it is for the scammer to be successful. Of course, knowledge is power, and that kind of buyer power cuts the profits of scammer AND some jack legs trying to take advantage of an excited buyer in our hobby.
